The Marquis pieces focus on the variety within each piece which invites in harsh contrast and the focus on gesture and “language type” (specific gestures that limit improvisation that create strong springboards for improvisation) as key factors that create variety of aesthetic sound and help the construction of improvisations. All of these pieces vary greatly in their durations.

Kostochki Pieces:
These pieces require the performers to use their aural skills and intuition, heavily. They are more “through-composed (and heavily notated)” and often focus on melody, flow and development. The pieces, have set structures, however, only with change with regard to their individual characteristics will the pieces feel and sound very different every time performed because “the whole and parts mutually and reciprocally influence and modify each other,” (D. Rudhyar).
